Alcohol Problem Effects

The effects of alcohol problems depend on the severity of a person's alcohol use. Alcoholism may take its toll on a person's physical, mental and social health, and may even result in death.

Physical Health

People who are dependent on alcohol mostly can't control the urge to drink despite the health problems they may already be facing. Liver cirrhosis and pancreatitis are common illnesses for people with alcohol problems, as well as epilepsy, dementia, heart disease and polyneuropathy. Sexual dysfunctions may also be experienced. In extreme cases, alcoholism in conjunction with other illnesses may result to death.

Mental Health

Long-term use of alcohol may also affect the functions of the brain. Anxiety and depression are common psychiatric disorders, especially during withdrawal. These disorders may subside or disappear with alcohol abstinence. Chronic alcohol abuse may also lead to organic brain syndrome, psychosis, confusion and panic disorder. They are commonly misdiagnosed as other major mental disorders, like schizophrenia.

Social Health

The effects of alcohol problems on an alcoholic's relationship with his or her family and social circle are usually eminent. The physical and mental effects of alcohol abuse also coincide with a person's social problems. Drunkenness or hang over during work hours may lead to loss of employment, while reduced judgment may result to drunken driving, civil disobedience and other violations of the law.

The long-term adverse effects of alcoholism may manifest in all facets of a person's life. Before any serious damage is inflicted, come up with a course of action using our comprehensive questionnaire.

Help
The alcohol problem in America is more serious than most of us realize. Based on a recent study, millions of Americans were found to be using alcohol and drugs to gain comfort and temporarily escape their stressful conditions. While alcohol is not the sole "pain-killer" in the US today, it remains the most accessible and legal means of escape.
